アップル社へのサファイアガラス製造メーカーとしてアリゾナに工場を持っており、またiPhone6ならびにiPhone6 Plusへのサファイアガラス供給で噂されていたGT Advanced Technologies社ですが、先ほどChapter 11 bankruptcy protection(連邦倒産法第11章)を申請した（当社ページはこちら）とのことです！
今後のApple社へのサファイアガラス供給はどうなる？
発表文の内容を見ると、9月29日の時点で預金口座として約85百万ドル（日本円にして、約85億円）があったこと、またDIPファイナンス（民事再生法等の法的整理課にある企業向けの短期融資）を行うことを希望して、社員の給料や対企業向けの支払いなどの当面の運転資金を調達したいとのコメントをしています。また、当社CEOであるTom Gutierrez氏は、「今日のアナウンスメントだが、これで当社がなくなってしまうわけではなく、今後より力強い形でビジネスプランを実行していき、資金的にもサポートを得ることで当社のバランスシートを改善したい。当社の現状を見ると、Chapter 11の申請がすべてにとって最適だと判断した」と述べています。
GT indicated that as of September 29, 2014 it had approximately $85 million of cash. In addition, it is now seeking debtor-in-possession financing, which, once obtained, would provide the company with an immediate source of additional funds. These funding sources will enable GT to satisfy the customary obligations associated with the daily operation of its business, including the timely payment of employee wages and other obligations. “GT has a strong and fundamentally sound underlying business,” said Tom Gutierrez, president and chief executive officer of GT. “Today’s filing does not mean we are going out of business; rather, it provides us with the opportunity to continue to execute our business plan on a stronger footing, maintain operations of our diversified business, and improve our balance sheet.
“We are convinced that the rehabilitative process of chapter 11 is the best way to reorganize, protect our company and provide a path to our future success. We remain committed to our roots in innovation and our diversification strategy. We plan to continue to operate as a technology leader across our core set of businesses.”
iPhone6、ならびにiPhone6 Plusへの前面サファイアガラス搭載の噂が叶わなかったことで、同社(NASDAQ: GTAT)の株価が9日に約13%下落し、一日の下落率としては過去最大になったり、証券アナリストから本件で格下げをされたりなどといった状態が続いてきましたが、今日の発表を受けて同社の株価はiPhone6の発表日前日辺りの17.20ドルからは大分下となる、現在前日比-91.04%となる、0.99ドルで取引されています。
Apple Watchの3つのモデルのうち、2つのモデルであると「Apple Watch」「Apple Watch Edition」向けにサファイアガラスの供給を予定していた同社ですが、このChapter 11を受けてどのようになるのか、ちゃんとApple Watchが来年2015年2月に計画通りに発売開始となるか、とても気がかりです。
